Holy Motors

Very Mulholland Drive, this, in terms of being quite a disparate set of encounters and visual stimuli that sort of add up but leave a lot of unanswered questions and issues. The set-up is simple. Mr. Oscar enters a limo at the start of the day, to be driven to various appointments where he adopts different persona and costumes to perform various roles, surrounded by people who either know him-in-persona or who do not notice his artificiality. Gradually, the artificiality of this begins to seep into the performance - for instance, Mr. Oscar has to leave to go to another appointment after acting the death of an uncle; the niece says 'don't worry, I have another appointment too'. And that's well after a number of 'deaths' which should have had Mr. Oscar in hospital at the very least. And then someone with an 'appointment' turns out to... well. To presumably not do as well as he does in one of Those Situations.

It's... all Very Odd. I'm not entirely sure it's successful. It's worth seeing, partly for the 'look at the way you can use film to do things that aren't necessarily narratively predictable', and partly for the excellent cinematography. But something feels... a little... poised? I mean, it is a French film and that's a little bit par for the course, but there's something that's just a bit too... careful. But then, if we're talking about artificiality and pretence and acting, isn't that part of the point too?

Yes. Interesting. Glad I have seen it. But definitely the sort of film to watch at home with G and be able to discuss over the subtitles rather than watch in deadly seriousness in an art-house cinema.
