The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms

This is a Harryhausen film, featuring a Rhedosaurus which is woken from the Arctic by a nuclear explosion let of for reasons of Science. The beast moves along the coast towards what must in all natural sense be its ancestral breeding grounds (not that anyone says as much, sadly), then decides it fancies the bright lights of New York. It meets its end due to Science, surrounded by a burning roller coaster, which is pretty epic. Considering the age of the thing, it's still pretty spectacular. There are some naïve touches - "look, this chap in Canada might be able to corroborate your story! Let's call the Canadian switchboard operator and have her put us through to him!" - which are quite sweet. Non-naturalistic, but very much of their time. G, who is much more into monster movies than I am, has recently seen Pacific Rim, and says one of the nice things about it is how it has kept those kinds of innocent the-world-doesn't-work-like-that-but-we'll-buy-it-for-now processes that are so much part of the genre at this period.

I enjoyed it. It's good fun, the dialogue isn't bad, the acting's not bad, and there's a dirty great Harryhausen dinosaur in the middle of it. What more could you want for a Saturday night in?

Also noted - 40 and 41: The Last Legion and King Arthur. Comment on these will be made Elsewhere.
