A Practical Wedding - Meg Keene
This is my second 'how to do weddings' book, to follow One Perfect Day. The theme here is 'guys, be realistic...' and to emphasise that the important thing is not all the frilly stuff, but creating a joyful day. There's a lot in here ideologically that speaks to me quite strongly, but also a lot that reaffirms sensible things - you don't have to have the most crafty wedding in the world evah if you never go near crafty things on a day to day basis; there is no problem with spending money to make problems go away; there are many different ways to approach budgeting; and so forth.
It sounds a lot like common sense, and I'll be honest, reading it felt like a lot of common sense too. But do you know what? That's a good thing. I'm managing to stay quite sane so far, mainly because we're both being quite sensible and practical, but it's also just a bit tempting to fall over and start swearing. And to reading something at this stage that reminded me that the most important thing is having a great day is exactly what I needed. I think I'm going to keep this to hand to dip into and remind me about what I'm aiming for, because it's uplifting and sensible (and quite happy to support you in telling people where to get off if they are adding to your stress, which is great).
So, an open-minded sensible book with a guide to Stuff To Do, and some good organisation tips. I have a new spreadsheet which isn't getting much use yet, but I now know it will do. And some other sensible thoughts too. So, overall, a thumbs up for this one.
