From the Beeb:

Italian archaeologists say they have found the long-lost underground grotto where ancient Romans believed a female wolf suckled Romulus and Remus.

Whatever it is, it looks very exciting!

Also, less excitingly, Home Office spectacularly cocks up once more, mislaying extensive personal details of all families in the UK with a child under 16 in the post.

So very not impressed with the Labour government right now. PMQs tomorrow is going to be bloody and full of flying bits of flesh, I can tell.

Wow, thanks for the link about the Lupercal! I hadn't seen that. I look forward very much to the emergence of more detail on it - of course we knew something like that should be there, but it'll be fascinating to see how and when it was actually used and embellished. I look forward less to Andrea Carandini popping up and saying that this 'proves' the Romulus and Remus legend. But we must grin and bear it...

You've probably already seen it, but (inevitably!) Mary Beard has a take (http://timesonline.typepad.com/dons_life/2007/11/have-we-found-t.html)...

Yup - and I see she has Carandini's number, too! She's quite right, of course, to point out that this may not even be the cave that imperial-era Romans believed to be the Lupercal at all. But whatever it is, it's definitely interesting. Considering what a centre of power the Palatine hill was, and especially how important it was in the Augustan age to the creation of the principate, anything new, and anything as apparently well-preserved as that grotto, is good news.

As if they didn't have enough to worry about with their children sitting in a sorting office somewhere.
