Willow

This is, well, this is supposedly a cult film. I think it's incredibly silly, although I'm glad to have seen it. The plot is essentially a Nelwyn family (think Hobbit ripoff) finds what is essentially a human baby floating in a nearby river, takes the baby in, discovers baby is destined to destroy eeeeevil queen, takes baby along to help destroy eeeeevil queen, picks up a rather dishy but terribly silly Val Kilmer and a couple of comedic French brownies (don't ask) on the way, converts eeeeeeevil queen's daughter by virtue of Val Kilmer (don't ask), destroys eeeeeevil queen. That's it, essentially, although with a bit of magic and turning people into things thrown in. Daft, daft, and more daft. Three stars on the grounds that the French brownies were quite amusing, and Val Kilmer... well. Was Val Kilmer being very silly. It's not that it's a bad film, it's just that in this 80s high fantasy genre it's absolutely nothing special.

Footballers Wives, Season 1

More a note to say I've seen this than anything deeper. I caught a couple of episodes at some stage in the UK and thought it was reasonably trite fare. I have to say that I think I do prefer it to Desperate Housewives - it doesn't engage in that awful painful comedy that, for instance, Susan Mayer always gets trapped in, and that I can't stand. The acting is also pretty universally awful, but in a rather fun Sunset Beach kind of way. The plot moves quickly, there's some vaguely amusing daft dialogue, plenty of sex, and some really 'boo-hiss' characters. I have to say I'm quite attached to Chardonnay, although anyone who couldn't spot the eating disorder by about episode three needed to have their ear clipped, and how Tanya keeps her cocaine addiction under wraps is beyond me. But it's all very silly and OTT, and a good wind-down.

Good lord, the thought of trying to track down related fiction genuinely never occured to me. Ewwwww.
