The Bird Cage
I'd been meaning to watch this for ages anyway, but the passing of Robin Williams bought it further up the to-do list. The plot is simple - a gay man and his long-time partner have to deal with his son's announcement that he is going to marry a very right-wing senator's daughter, and negotiate meeting the parents. There are elements of this that are just divine and elements that are hideously awkward, but that's OK! It's a cheerful, ridiculous romp that involves drag and serious identity politics, and nobody gets off the hook. Plus it all works out alright in the end despite everything, and who doesn't love a bit of cheerful fairy tale from time to time? I'm sure there are all sorts of problems with it, but there are some lovely tensions when the partner in drag basically out-does the right-wing housewife and mother in every way possible, followed by the puncturing of the bubble when his 'true' identity is revealed. Very entertaining satirical reminder on the fact that our expectations often colour what's in front of our eyes far more than they should.
