Guardians of the Galaxy

We saw this while on holiday. In some ways, it was very good - it had the same sort of 'we know we're a summer blockbuster and we're cool with that' that the first Transformers film had, minus the irritating romance subplot. In others, OH GOOD HEAVENS FAIL. The Fail mainly appeared in one or two lines of dialogue which appeared to have been taken from a completely separate film script and dumped into this one - I have no idea how they got past the script editors, let alone actually getting filmed, because they were so clangingly brazen in the out-of-place-ness that... yeah. So while I quite enjoyed most of it, the few absolutely glaring misses were even more emphatic and disappointing because of it.

To which, bah and humbug, really.

One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing

I used to watch this on a very regular basis as a small child; recently I felt like a bit of a nostalgia trip, so settled down with it again. In some ways, it is absolutely brilliant and a ride of fabulous fantasy involving nannies stealing dinosaurs still. In other ways... oh my goodness, the handling of race. Not good. Not good at all. Let's just have the massive stereotype fit. But then, conversely... good heavens does it ever pass the Bechdel Test with flying colours, which probably is one of the reasons that I loved it quite as much as I did. This illustrates one of the complicated things about assessing films, which is that while on one measure they may do fabulously, on another they may fail completely. But that's not really the point - this was good old-fashioned comfort watching, and I can allow it some failings for having been made in the 1970s.
