Careful
This one gets blamed on G. We were looking for another Silly Film, when this popped up and G went "oh, look, it's by Guy Maddin, let's see!', because Guy Maddin directed Twilight of the Ice Nymphs, which his brother gave to him for his birthday a couple of years ago, and of which he has become quite fond.
This is DAFT. It is set in a valley which is constantly under threat from avalanches, and thus the villagers must constantly tiptoe around and control the amount of noise they make - thus leading to repression, incestuous and murderous desires, and general mayhem. It does an excellent job of capturing the style of a 1920s black and white film, despite the colour gels that are liberally and somewhat illogically applied throughout - but it captures the general costume and set and make-up and so forth of a period piece. But it's ABSOLUTELY BLOODY DAFT.
Sorry, I really can't quite bring myself to say much more than that. I was, it has to be said, a bit tipsy while we were watching this, and I do rather think that if I hadn't been, I wouldn't have made it through to the end. Some interesting ideas in potentia, but it never really runs with them where I would like it to. Two stars.
