History as she used to be done

Women have their uses for historians. They offer relief from warfare, legislation, and the history of ideas; and they enrich the central theme of social history, if and when enough evidence is available.

Ronald Syme, The Augustan Aristocracy, page 168.

"I read it a little as a duty, but it tells me nothing that does not either vex or weary me. The quarrels of popes and kings, with wars or pestilences, in every page; the men all so good for nothing, and hardly any women at all—it is very tiresome: and yet I often think it odd that it should be so dull, for a great deal of it must be invention."

Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey.

Bwaaah!

Especially entertaining if by Augustan Aristocracy we're talking Livia, because, ERM. ;-)

I'm not sure if this makes me want to laugh or cry.

Have you spoken to [livejournal.com profile] cantabulous about the HM project, btw? I'm not sure how far he got with his bio, but I remember him finding a couple of tasty manuscripts in the UL - I assume you've swapped notes, but if not, might be worth getting in touch :)

I can't believe he didn't mention our pretty hair.

I have not! He seem rather to have fallen off the radar in general lately. We spoke about his UL explorations a couple of years ago, but I don't have anything more recent than that.

What do you mean, "used to be"?

[identity profile] the-lady-lily.livejournal.com 2009-09-30 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, but he is a bio-chemist, not an historian.

Oh, I agree, I was just observing that this attitude has hardly disappeared from academia...
