heya, actually, if you watch the deleted scenes (yes, I am a big fan of this movie and have watched the deleted scenes) Yitzhak was a drag queen from the very beginning and Hedwig made him give it up when she brought him to the states. It was cut for being too confusing as it brought Hedwig back to Europe and the story is clearly cut between Hansel in his native land to Hedwig in america.

anyway, point being, the concept was that Hedwig tore away someone else's identity because it might detract from his/her own. I don't know if that makes a difference to you, but it changed a lot of the movie for me.
